Crispy Air Fryer Fries

If you've ever wondered why restaurant fries are so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the secret isn't just the cooking method—it's how the potatoes are prepared before they ever go into the air fryer.

A quick soak followed by a short boil removes some of the potato's excess starch, helping create fries with a crispy golden exterior and a soft, fluffy center. It adds a little extra time, but I promise it's worth it!

I recently made these homemade fries and turned them into an easy weeknight dinner by topping them with leftover slow-cooker BBQ pulled chicken. It was one of those meals that came together from ingredients I already had on hand, and it was a great reminder that nourishing and tasty meals don't have to be complicated.

Whether you serve these fries alongside burgers, sandwiches, grilled chicken, or enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauce, they're a delicious side you'll want to make again and again.

These crispy homemade air fryer fries are simple, flavorful, and the perfect addition to any meal. A quick soak and parboil create that crispy outside and fluffy inside, making them a delicious side for burgers, sandwiches, grilled chicken, or your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

  • 1 large russet potato
  • 1–2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Paprika
  • Black pepper
  • Nutritional yeast (optional, but highly recommended!)
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the potato into fry shapes and soak in cold water for 30–60 minutes. This removes excess starch, helping the fries crisp up. If you're short on time, even 15–20 minutes makes a difference.
  2. Drain the potatoes and boil them for 5–7 minutes, just until they're slightly tender.
  3. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry thoroughly with a clean towel. The drier they are, the crispier they'll become.
  4. Toss the potatoes with avocado oil, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and nutritional yeast if using. For extra crispiness, wait to add the salt until after cooking.
  5. Place the fries in a single layer in your air fryer basket.
  6. Air fry at 375°F for 10 minutes. Shake the basket.
  7. Increase the temperature to 400°F and cook another 8–12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let the fries cool for 2–3 minutes, then sprinkle with salt to taste and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Fries

A few simple techniques make all the difference:

  1. Don't skip the soak. Soaking the potatoes removes excess starch, which helps them crisp up while cooking.

  2. Parboil first. Boiling the potatoes for a few minutes before air frying softens the inside so you get that fluffy texture without overcooking the outside.

  3. Dry the potatoes well. After boiling, pat the potatoes dry with a towel. Removing excess moisture helps them become crisp instead of steaming.

  4. Don't overcrowd the basket. Arrange the fries in a single layer for even crispiness. If you're making a larger batch, cook them in batches for the best results.

Season after cooking if you love extra crispy fries. Salt draws out moisture, so adding it at the end helps maintain that crispy texture.

Serving Ideas

These fries are incredibly versatile. Try serving them with:

  • Burgers

  • Sandwiches or wraps

  • Grilled chicken

  • BBQ pulled chicken

  • Turkey burgers

  • Homemade chicken tenders

  • Ketchup, BBQ sauce, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce

You can even turn them into loaded fries by adding shredded cheese, BBQ chicken, green onions, or black beans for a satisfying meal.

Gentle Nutrition Corner

Potatoes often get an unfair reputation, but they're actually a nutritious, satisfying carbohydrate that provides potassium, vitamin C, and fiber, especially when you leave the skin on.

Instead of thinking about potatoes as something to avoid, consider what you can add to make the meal more balanced. Pairing these fries with a source of protein, vegetables, or both can help create a meal that's satisfying, nourishing, and keeps you nourished for longer.

For example, I topped mine with leftover BBQ pulled chicken and served it with a side of vegetables. Simple, delicious, and made from foods I already had at home.

I hope you give these crispy air fryer fries a try! If you make them, I'd love to hear what you paired them with or how you made them your own.

Happy cooking!
